THE GLOW JOURNAL / PRODUCT EXPLORER

10 K & J finds. 10 ALTS to explore.

A little label literacy goes a long way. Start with your skin goal, meet Korean and Japanese skincare favourites, then compare a Western option by ingredient or routine role.

HOW TO READ AN ALT

Same goal does not mean same formula.

An ingredient overlap is a useful place to start. For other pairs, the match is the job a product does in a routine. Concentration, texture, fragrance, directions and local rules can change the experience. Check the current pack before buying and introduce one new product at a time. In Australia, use the TGA sunscreen label guide to check local sunscreen information.

FIVE FROM KOREA · FIVE FROM JAPAN

Pick by your goal.

These are ten editorial examples selected to teach comparison, not a best-to-worst ranking. The links go to each brand's product page so you can check today's ingredients and availability.

01K-BEAUTYIngredient overlap

GOAL / Everyday hydration

ORIGINAL FIND

Torriden DIVE IN Serum

WESTERN ALT TO EXPLORE

The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 (with Ceramides)

Why compare them: Both centre on multiple forms of hyaluronic acid for a light hydration step; both also use panthenol.

What changes: The Ordinary adds a ceramide complex. Texture and the full formula may feel different even when the headline ingredients overlap.

02K-BEAUTYSame routine role

GOAL / Hydration + comfort

ORIGINAL FIND

COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence

WESTERN ALT TO EXPLORE

La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Serum

Why compare them: Both are hydrating leave-on steps with hyaluronic acid and panthenol in the ingredient story.

What changes: Snail secretion filtrate is the defining ingredient in COSRX; Hyalu B5 is not a snail-mucin duplicate. Check personal preferences and the current label.

03K-BEAUTYShared active

GOAL / Oil balance + tone

ORIGINAL FIND

Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum: Propolis + Niacinamide

WESTERN ALT TO EXPLORE

The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%

Why compare them: Niacinamide is the clear point of overlap if that is the ingredient you want to explore.

What changes: The Korean serum includes propolis; the Western option is a 10% niacinamide and zinc formula. Neither concentration nor feel should be assumed equivalent.

04K-BEAUTYRelated botanical

GOAL / Visible redness + comfort

ORIGINAL FIND

SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Ampoule

WESTERN ALT TO EXPLORE

La Roche-Posay Cicaplast B5 Spray

Why compare them: The ampoule features centella extract; the spray uses madecassoside, a compound associated with centella, alongside panthenol.

What changes: One is a leave-on ampoule and the other a spray. This is a soothing-step comparison, not a formula match or treatment for a diagnosed condition.

05K-BEAUTYIngredient + step overlap

GOAL / Moisture before cream

ORIGINAL FIND

Laneige Cream Skin Cerapeptide Refiner

WESTERN ALT TO EXPLORE

CeraVe Hydrating Toner

Why compare them: Both sit early in a routine and include humectants and ceramides for a more comfortable hydrated feel.

What changes: Laneige is a milky toner with meadowfoam oil and squalane; CeraVe's toner also includes niacinamide. Choose by texture and tolerance.

06J-BEAUTYShared ingredient

GOAL / Deep-feeling hydration

ORIGINAL FIND

Hada Labo Gokujyun Premium Hyaluronic Acid Lotion

WESTERN ALT TO EXPLORE

Vichy Minéral 89 Daily Booster

Why compare them: Both are hydration-first products built around hyaluronic acid and can fit between cleansing and moisturiser.

What changes: The Hada Labo lotion uses eight types of hyaluronic acid and feels richer; Vichy's current booster pairs hyaluronic with polyglutamic acid. Neither replaces moisturiser for everyone.

07J-BEAUTYSame routine role

GOAL / Dryness + barrier support

ORIGINAL FIND

Curél Intensive Moisture Care Moisture Facial Cream

WESTERN ALT TO EXPLORE

CeraVe Moisturizing Cream

Why compare them: Both are moisturising creams aimed at dry-feeling skin and the moisture barrier.

What changes: Curél uses a ceramide-functioning ingredient; CeraVe lists three ceramides. Their textures, pack sizes and complete formulas differ.

08J-BEAUTYShared active family

GOAL / Uneven-looking tone

ORIGINAL FIND

Rohto Melano CC Intensive Anti-Spot Essence

WESTERN ALT TO EXPLORE

CeraVe Skin Renewing Vitamin C Serum

Why compare them: Both put vitamin C at the centre of a brightening step for the appearance of uneven tone.

What changes: CeraVe states 10% L-ascorbic acid. Melano CC is a Japanese quasi-drug with its own active and labelling rules; do not equate strength or claims from the name alone.

09J-BEAUTYSame routine job

GOAL / Removing makeup + SPF

ORIGINAL FIND

DHC Deep Cleansing Oil

WESTERN ALT TO EXPLORE

The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser

Why compare them: Both are first-step cleansers intended to lift makeup and daily residue before rinsing.

What changes: DHC is an oil cleanser with an olive-oil base; The Ordinary is a balm that melts to an oil-like texture. Rinse feel and ingredients are different.

10J-BEAUTYSame routine job

GOAL / Daily sun protection

ORIGINAL FIND

Bioré UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence SPF 50

WESTERN ALT TO EXPLORE

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Invisible Fluid SPF 50+

Why compare them: Both are lightweight facial sunscreen options for the last step of a daytime routine.

What changes: UV filters, tested claims and rules differ by market. Buy sunscreen labelled for your country, follow its directions and never treat one SPF formula as an ingredient dupe of another.
